Common Electrical Repairs

Although we’ll need to properly diagnose your vehicle, we’re happy to share information with you about the most common auto electrical repairs. One of the most common tasks we do is battery replacement. Your car’s battery is needed to provide electrical current for initial start-up as well as the power for accessories. If something has drained the battery’s reserve, a jump-start may remedy the situation. However, a weak battery should be replaced. Another potential source of trouble is the alternator. This component changes mechanical energy into electrical energy that recharges the battery and runs various components in your vehicle. If the alternator fails, your battery will operate without recharging, soon draining of its stored power. A related component is the starter. Also known as the starter motor, this part is responsible for using electrical current to turn the motor. Another potential electrical issue is bad spark plugs. These allow an electrical spark to jump a predetermined gap at the tip of the plug, providing the impetus for the small, controlled explosion in the engine that is combustion. If the tips are dirty or worn, the electrical current flow is disrupted. Depending upon the exact problem, cleaning or replacement may be in order. As a related issue, the ignition coil(s) intensify the electricity moving between the battery and the spark plugs. If this cracks or otherwise becomes compromised, your vehicle may not start, particularly when it’s already hot. Because the engine control module receives, synthesizes, and reacts to various data points within your vehicle, the engine may not operate well, if at all, if this component malfunctions or dies, making tuning or replacement necessary. Finally, multiple smaller electrical parts can go bad and disrupt the flow of power, including fuses and wiring.
