Keeping Your Vehicle Cool

One important facet of keeping your vehicle’s passenger cabin cool and comfortable is preventive maintenance and routine services. It’s a great idea to have Mike’s Automotive Service check your system periodically. A good rule of thumb is about once per year, preferably before summer weather arrives. We’ll ensure that all components are in good condition and working properly. However, if you discover an unwelcome air conditioner issue at any time, our professional mechanics are here to help. If your A/C is blowing air that’s not cool enough, it likely needs a refrigerant recharge. That’s actually the most common repair. Although this is normal when it happens at great intervals, the system shouldn’t need recharging frequently. If it does, we’ll need to find the source of the leak that’s allowing it to escape. Another potential problem is observed when the A/C doesn’t power on at all. Usually, this is evidence of an electrical problem. A broken wire or a blown fuse may be the culprit. If the system operates but produces no cool air, the compressor may have failed. In addition to missing your cold air, you’ll probably also realize that you’re not hearing the tell-tale sound of the compressor cycling on and off in the background. Should you find water puddling under the dash or notice wet carpet in that area, let us know. That’s probably an indication of a clog that’s causing water to overflow into the passenger area. Finally, a wet, musty odor that presents itself each time you engage the A/C may point to the presence of mold or mildew in the ducts, a condition that needs cleaning so that you don’t continue breathing in the spores.
